Data

Foundation Dams Data and Project RAD.

We take openness and quality assurance seriously at the Foundation Dam.

Project RAD («Realiable and available data») started in 2023 and is ongoing. One central part of the project is to make reliable data available to anyone who wants to do research on our processes or just want to check if we are doing. That’s what this page is about.

About the data

As of May 13th the data include over 200 variables from our different processes:

  • Application form (like application amounts, type of project, research area, start and end date and a lot more)
  • Review form (information on the assessment of the application)
  • Feedback form (the satisfaction of the applicant with the application process, time spent, persons involved in the applications and so on)
  • Progress report (how the funded projects are doing)
  • End reports (how the project performed)

The code book

The variables are described in detail in this code book. There you will find a spreadsheet with the following information on each variable:

  • The variable name
  • Description of the variable
  • Data type

Requirements for data access

We share the data with everyone, but there are some basic requirements for everyone who wants access:

  1. Research questions and the variables wanted must be described when requesting access.
  2. Results and code from the analyzes are shared openly under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license
  3. Any research done on the data are published 1) as a registered report and 2) with a Dam employee as one of the co-authors
  4. The analyses are written in R or Python or are done in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets. Analyses done in software like SPSS, MATLAB or Stata will not be accepted.
  5. Personal data regarding applicants, reviewers and other users in our database will only be shared if is in accordance with Norwegian and EU law (GDPR) and the necessary approvals are

As long as these requirements are met, we will give access to the variables needed in your analyses.

Apply for data access

Anyone can apply for access by sending an email to Chief Program Officer Jan-Ole Hesselberg.

Research ideas

We are a cost-efficient and small administrative staff, and unfortunately, do not have enough time to do all the research we believe to be of interest. If you have the time but lack ideas, here are some research questions that we would love for someone to take on. The list will be continuously updated:

  • Which method and/or design characteristics predictsuccess in applications?
  • Which method and/or design characteristics predict success based on end reports?
  • Are there any characteristics in the application that predict success in PhD projects?
  • Do changes in research applications from pre-proposal to full proposal, based on reviewer comments, predict higher application scores?
  • Has open review affected any characteristics or language of the applications?
